If you are looking to make a friendly wager on today’s Super Bowl (note: the Miami Valley News does not endorse gambling), we have a simple suggestion.
Bet on the Denver Broncos.
Why? Because Charlie Burgbacher said so.
For the past seven years, the Miami Valley Sunday News has asked Miami County football coaches to predict a Super Bowl winner. In that time span, Burgbacher — the coach at Tippecanoe High School — has put together the best record, going 5-2. This year, Burgbacher has decided to cast his lot with the Broncos.
Based on his success rate, we suggest you do the same.
Here’s a look at who (and why) Miami County’s football experts are picking to win today’s Super Bowl contest between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks:
— Scot Brewer (Troy): “I’m rooting for Denver. I don’t know if they are actually going to win or not, but I’m a big (Denver quarterback) Peyton Manning fan. He’s just been phenomenal this year. I’d like to see him win another Super Bowl.”
— Steve Nolan (Troy Christian): “I like Denver. If their defense can show up a little bit, I think Peyton Manning will be able to score enough points for the Broncos to win. You can say what you want about Seattle’s defense and the way their defensive backfield is playing, but I think Manning will figure out a way. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them run a few pick plays to take out their secondary — they’ve got receivers who are capable of doing that, too. If the Broncos play good enough defense and let Manning stay on the field, he’ll figure out a way to win.”
— Bill Nees (Piqua): “Denver has a seemingly unstoppable offense. Peyton Manning is able to audible in and out of any situation and they are able to put themselves in the best spot to score. I guess the biggest question mark will be Seattle’s offense vs. the Broncos’ defense. I don’t know if Denver has an answer for Seattle’s running back (Marshawn Lynch), but I think Denver will have too much offense.”
— Charlie Burgbacher (Tippecanoe): “I’m picking Denver because they have Peyton Manning and I don’t like (Seattle coach) Pete Carroll. I think it should be an interesting game, but I’m going to have to go with Denver.”
— Max Current (Miami East): “I’m taking the Seahawks. I like their defense. Their defense is pretty stout. With Manning running the show, people are pretty fired up about the Broncos, but I think Seattle has a good enough defense. He’s a great quarterback and this and that, but I’d also like to see some new blood win it. I love Seattle’s fans. They get really into it. All of their fans are pretty rowdy, which is the way it’s supposed to be. I also like Seattle offense — they are a tough, hard-nosed offense that tried to run the ball first.”
— Mark Lane (Milton-Union): “I’ve got to stick with the Seahawks because of their defense. It’s hard to go against Peyton Manning, but Seattle really has their defense going right now. I think a lot of it will come down to how the refs call the game. If they let Seattle play physical, the Seahawks are the best defense around.”
— Dave Miller (Covington): “I’m picking the Seahawks. Their defense is outstanding. It’s hard to go against the Broncos — in my heart, I’d like to see Peyton Manning win another Super Bowl — but Seattle’s defense is phenomenal. Honestly, I think the real Super Bowl was two weeks ago when the Seahawks played the (San Francisco) 49ers. I think those are the two best teams.”
— Curtis Enis (Bradford): “I’ve got to go with the Broncos. I graduated in 1998 with Peyton Manning and we were both Walter Camp All-Americans together (Manning at the University of Tennessee and Enis at Penn State University). We got to hang out a couple of times together.”
