To the Editor:

On behalf of the Piqua Rotary Club, I want to thank the residents, businesses and schools in the Piqua community. Your critical support allowed Rotary to conduct a successful fundraiser on Friday, March 14. The outstanding turnout enjoyed an entertaining basketball game featuring former Buckeye football players against 16 area All-Stars. The game also benefited the local D.A.R.E. program, who jointly participated in the event. Rotary especially thanks Piqua Superintendent Rick Hanes and Athletic Director Chip Hare for hosting the event at Garbry gymnasium. It was a perfect venue for the game. Additional thank yous go out to auctioneer Joe Mikolajewski, sixth-grader Alyssa Keeler for singing a rousing rendition of the National Anthem and the YMCA for supplying towels to the Buckeye players. Individual contributions were greatly appreciated via ticket sales and the successful bidders of the auctioned fully autographed items. Finally and most importantly, Friday night’s event would not have been possible if not for the generous support from our corporate sponsors, who unfortunately I cannot publicly recognize here. All this funding goes right back to work in our community.

Rotary is a local and worldwide organization selflessly engaged in service to humanity. The Piqua Rotary Club enjoys an outstanding ongoing partnership with Piqua City Schools, specifically the Nicklin Learning Center. We provide volunteers that read in the classroom, distribute new books monthly to students celebrating birthdays and support the Breakfast with Santa and Brukner Nature Center programs. Rotary also supports the schools through our partnership with the Miami County Dental Clinic by purchasing equipment for their mobile units used to conduct oral dental exams for students in the entire district. Moreover, we distribute free toothbrushes and toothpaste to the NLC kindergarten students throughout the year. Other notable Rotary initiatives are to award academic scholarships and the global Polio Plus program to eradicate polio.

Thank you Piqua Community. Rotary is humbled by your support.
