Crash claims cyclist’s life

MIAMI COUNTY — A Saturday morning crash between a van and a bicycle claimed the cyclist’s life.

Deputies and Troy Fire Fire Department medics responded to Troy-Sidney Road at Loy Road at 11:08 a.m. on the report of a crash involving a van and a bicycle.

CareFlight was initially put on standby but was cancelled.

The rider was reported to be riding with a group participating in a distance ride that began in Springfield, and ran through Quincy, Sidney and Troy, before reversing course to end in Springfield.

The crash occurred with both the cyclist, who was described as an experienced rider who was out in front, not part of a pack, and the minivan, northbound on Troy-Sidney Road. The van stuck the cyclist, who was thrown approximately 125-150 feet from the point of impact. The cyclist, who is not from the Miami County-area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van was uninjured.

No names or further details are yet available.

Troy-Sidney Road is closed between Loy Road and Statler Road as a crash reconstruction team from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office investigates the crash.​
