Joe's date of death and place of birth is not known, however it is
known that he was living in Newberry Township of Miami County Ohio when
he applied for his pension on 21 March 1821. Further, he his wife were
recorded on the 1820 Federal Census of Newberry Township. On that census
Joseph and wife were both over 45 years old. According to their neighbors,
as shown on the 1820 census, they were most likely located just north of
what is presant day Covington.
He served as a private in The Army of the Revolution for five years
and eight months. He enlisted in Berkely County Virginia around May 1777
in a company commanded by Captian Johns and then shortly after he joined
a regiment commanded by Colonel Hunt at Winchester. In November 1778 he
enlisted again in a company of Cavalry commanded by Colonal White. After
a year he was transferred to Colonal William A. Washington's Regiment of
Horse, and served until the close of the war in companies commanded by
Captins Grimes and Hughs. He was at the Battle of Guilford Court House,
N.C., Monk's Corner, Cowpens and Eutaw Springs. At a skrimish with the
Indians near Savannah Georga he was shot through the leg. He was present
at Yorktown at Cornwall's surrender and was discharged at Winchester Virginia.
