John Hilliard
John was born near Mt. Holly, New Jersey. In April 1798 he came to
what is now Springcreek Township in Miami County Ohio. He recieved a land
patent 31 Dec 1802. It is said that he died soon after and is buried without
a surviving gravemarker. His was the first whiteman funeral in the area
and was attended by both whitemen and Indians. The place was in the woods
of Section 25 of Springcreek Township. (Sec 25, Town 01, range 12) Very
likely to be near, yet back away from the banks of the Great Miami River
at that place.
Hillard was a private in Cornet Barnes Smock's Company of Light Dragoons,
in active service under command of Colonel Asher Holmes from 12 September
to 16 October 1779, Manmouth County New Jersey Militia.
