ACKLEY, DR. CARL ALFRED  

Dr. Carl Alfred Ackley was born on December 6, 1888 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio and died on June 6, 1964 in the VA Hospital in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio.  Carl was never married.  According to the censuses of 1900 and 1910 (he was 21 years of age in 1910) he lived on Quitman Street in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio.  There was a news article in the Washington Post News dated August 8, 1915 under the heading "Agriculture".  It states that "Dr. C. A. Ackley of the editorial section of the bureau of animal industry left last week for two weeks on the New Jersey coast".  While living in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, he entered the National Army on September 18, 1917 during World War I.  His assignment was with Battery B 322 Field Artillery and remained here until his discharge.  Carl became a Private First Class (PFC) on April 2, 1918, and became a private on November 1, 1918.  The area where he served was Meuse-Argonne.  Meuse is the name of a river and Argonne is located in Northeast France near Belgium between the Meuse and Aisine Rivers.  This area was stated to be one of the bloodiest and largest conflicts in modern age, World War I.  It was primarily a European War, but involved United States military units from 1917 to 1918.  Carl served with the American Expeditionary Forces from June 12, 1918 to May 16, 1919 and received his honorable discharge on May 27, 1919.  There were two more newspaper articles in the Washington Post News on June 1 and June 4, 1924 in which the same article was run two times.  It read as follows: "RADIO PROGRAMS FOR THE COMING WEEK" - WOR - Newark 405 - 8 PM - Dr. Carl Ackley, African big game hunter and explorer, talking on "My African Experiences".  The census of 1930 has Dr. Ackley living with Uncle F. H. Newton in Scioto, Ross County, Ohio, who is a brother of his mother, Catherine Newton Ackley.  He was survived by his brother, Warren Ackley.  Preceding him in death were his parents.  His father Alfred H. Ackley (Corporal Alfred Ackley) was born in November 1853 in Ohio and died January 10, 1937 in Montgomery County, Ohio.  He was buried on January 13, 1937 in Dayton National Cemetery, Montgomery County, Ohio.  Carl's mother was Catherine (sometimes called Katie) E. Newton Ackley and was born in March 1864 in Indiana.  She died in 1942 in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio.  Dr. Ackley was classified as an inmate at the US Veterans Hospital #97 in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio.  Carl was 76 years of age when he died of purulent bronchitis and abscesses in the VA Hospital in Chillicothe.  Funeral arrangements were handled by Trostel-Chapman Funeral Home in New Carlisle, Clark County, Ohio and their records indicate that no obituary was put in the local newspapers.  According to the Chillicothe Gazette there was no obituary in their newspapers.  Dr. Ackley was buried on June 6, 1964 in Bethel West Cemetery, Section C, Lot 100, Grave 7, Row 19.
