The Randolph Slaves

  • Who were the Randolph Slaves?
A brief history of the group's origin and how they came to settle in Miami County Ohio.
  • Randolph Slaves List
A copy of the court inventory listing the slaves freed in John Randolph's will.
  • 1850 Census Abstract
The group of settlers known as the Randolph Slaves arrived in Miami County during the summer of 1846, four years before the 1850 Federal Census was taken. This link provides a list of blacks and mulattos abstracted from that census of Miami County Ohio.

According to researcher Paul F. Heinegg, many of the families listed in the 1850 census abstract were the descendants of mixed-race African Americans who had been free for many generations before 1850. The Nickens family, for one, was free in the early 1700s, and the Banks family, descendants of a white woman who had children by a slave, were free from the late 1600s.
