Mary McCrea Deeter TROY - Mary McCrea Deeter, 104, formerly of Troy, died Wednesday March 18, 2009, at the Larksfield Place Health Care Center, Wichita, Kan.
She was born Feb. 23, 1905, to Frederick Augustus Bradford McCrea and Rose Adelaide Hicks McCrea in Wetaskiwin, then Northwest Territory, Canada.
She attended Sisters of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Edmonton Alberta, Canada, and did post graduate work at St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing, Rochester, Minn.
She continued her studies at Cleveland Clinic Hospital where she also held a supervisory position for five years. In 1930, she wed Don Favorite Deeter, M.D., resident surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic, who later became a prominent surgeon in Miami County. He preceded her in death in 1949.
She is survived by her daughter, Diana Williams (Richard) of Wichita, Kan.; a grandson, Benjamin Deeter Williams (Kim); a granddaughter, Jane Gillett (James); great-grandchildren. Rebecca and Angus Williams and William Gillett.
She had four brothers, deceased.
Since 2002 she has lived in Wichita. Mary was a lifelong member of the Anglican Church, a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Troy, since 1937 where she served as president of Trinity Church Woman's Auxiliary, director of the Altar Guild and Book of Remembrance Secretary.
She also was a member of St. Hilda's Guild. St. Hilda's sent parcels of clothing to Miss Connie Schlosser, nurse at a front line medical station in Vietnam.
Mary served on the Woman's Auxiliary to the National Council for the Diocese of Southern Ohio as Supply Secretary to the Missions.
Mary was a past president of the Miami County Medical Auxiliary, and was appointed to the State Board of the Woman's Auxiliary to the Ohio State Medical Society as Chair of Medical Careers. Mary researched and compiled the first resource book in Ohio for students interested in health sciences. It was titled "Sources of Scholarships and Loans for Students Interested in Para-Medical Careers in Ohio."
The publication brought recognition to the state auxiliary and an award to the Miami County Auxiliary.
Mary was interested in genealogical research. She was a life member of the Fort Edward, N.Y., Historical Society and a member of the Clan McCrea Society of North America, Wilmington, N.C.
She also supported the Miami County Historical Society, the Troy Historical Society and the Troy Historical Museum Society.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Troy.
Visitation for friends of the family will be held prior to the service from 10:30-11 a.m. Saturday. Internment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Hill.
The family requests no flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Troy Foundation's Don F. and Mary McCrea Deeter Family Fund, which benefits Brukner Nature Center and Friends of Hayner, or the Don F. Deeter Memorial Fund benefiting Trinity Episcopal Church.
