Center to host fundraiser

WEST MILTON — Next Saturday, the community is invited to enjoy an evening of good food for a good cause at the Milton-Union Senior Center and Community Club.

On May 14, the center is hosting a fundraiser to replace it’s aging flooring, which will feature homemade ice cream and wood-fired pizza by Simply Sweet.

Unlike many other senior centers, the Milton-Union Senior Center and Community Club is not city-owned or operated, which makes it difficult to finance major repairs.

“Anything that we do, we have to pay for ourselves,” Director Carol Garver said. “It’s hard when you’re on your own.”

The center has been hard at work making improvements to the property for several years now and next on the list are the center’s worn and peeling floors, which were originally installed in 1987.

“It’s a big project but it really does need to be replaced,” Garver said.

The center will be working toward this goal all year, planning other events and holding raffles throughout the year on baskets and handmade quilts.

On Saturday, Simply Sweet, operated by Dennis Delk and his family, will be providing homemade vanilla and black raspberry ice cream, as well as wood-fired pizzas. There will also be hot dogs, a selection of pies, and beverages. Pints and quarts will also be available for take-out purchase.

“The event starts at 4 p.m. and goes until we run out of food,” Garver said. Menu items will be priced a la carte.

Last fall, the center received a grant from the Miami County Foundation for automatic, handicap-accessible doors.

The center was also able to purchase new lighting last year, along with a new sign and new tables. They also benefited from a local student’s Eagle Scout project, ticking a fresh coat of interior paint off their to-do list.

“Last year we had a lot of blessings,” Garver said. She hopes that those blessings will continue in 2016.

In the future, Garver would also like to replace the center’s eight toilets with ADA compliant models.

“We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so any donations towards our flooring can be used as a tax deduction,” Garver added.
