MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami County Board of Elections met briefly Thursday afternoon, approving the Rotary contract for the special election coming up in June. The contract will be for approximately $9,400.
Director Bev Kendall explained that the Rotary contract was reduced after they decided that they will have the rovers set up the stands for the newly purchased e-poll books the night before the election. The judges for the election will have the e-poll books, and they will just have to plug them in once they arrive at each voting location that day.
“I think that’s a great deal,” chairman Kelly Gillis said.
Kendall also gave an update on training the poll workers for the election with the new e-poll books.
“We’re using them in training,” Kendall said, adding that they are training at the Hobart Center. “Everybody is liking them.”
The special election will take place on June 7. Voters of the 8th Congressional District will vote on former U.S. Representative John Boehner’s replacement. Warren Davidson, a businessman from Troy, received the Republican nomination during the March 15 Presidential Primary. Democratic candidate Corey Foister and Green Party candidate James Condit Jr. will also be running for Boehner’s seat. The special election will be county-wide.
The registration deadline for the June 7 special election has passed. There were approximately 130 absentee requests for the special election. The board will be factoring in provisional ballots on June 17, and they have to have the special election certified by June 20.
The board’s office will also be open on Memorial Day, May 30, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for early voters for the special election.
The Leadership Troy Alumni will be hosting an evening to Meet the Candidates for 8th Congressional District next week on Thursday, May 19. This forum will be held at the Troy Junior High School at 556 N. Adams St., Troy. Doors open at 7 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and will last 60 minutes.
