TIPP CITY — A Vandalia man charged with aggravated robbery is being held in the Miami County Jail on a $100,000 bond after allegedly attempting to steal a purse from an elderly Tipp City woman.

Donald William Johnson, 48, was arrested in Vandalia on Monday by Vandalia police on a warrant issued by the Tipp City Police Department.

He has been charged with first-degree felony aggravated robbery and first-degree misdemeanor assault.

Johnson is accused of stealing a purse from an elderly woman as she exited the Tipp City Dollar General on Aug. 11. Police reports say that Johnson approached the woman, asking for $5. When she refused, Johnson grabbed her purse and tried to run away.

A maintenance man working nearby observed the incident and ran after Johnson, recovering the purse after a struggle. Johnson sustained a bite to his left arm during the altercation.

The maintenance man told police that Johnson threatened to shoot him.

Johnson was able to get to his vehicle and leave the scene. He was arrested on Aug. 15.

According to reports, Johnson told police that he was high the morning of the robbery and went to Tipp City to buy more heroin. He originally planned to rob the store before deciding to rob the woman instead, he told police.
