TIPP CITY – A Springfield man suffered non-life-threatening injuries when he accidentally shot himself with a newly-purchased handgun on Thursday.
Sgt. Chris Bobb of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office said that William C. Colwell, 74, had just purchased a handgun from Olde English Outfitters around 5 p.m.
Colwell, who holds a concealed carry permit, left the store, sat in his vehicle in the parking lot and decided to load the SIG 9mm handgun.
As Colwell was loading the handgun it discharged one round, striking Colwell in the left hand and left leg.
The Tipp City Rescue Squad was dispatched to the location where they treated Colwell before transporting him to Miami Valley Hospital.
Evan English, owner of Olde English Outfitters, said that this is the first injury due to an accidental discharge in 42 years.
“We are very serious about firearms safety.” said English, whose father founded the business in 1974, “We work to provide a safe place and a safe environment for employees and customers.”
Bobb said that Colwell was conscious and alert following the incident.
