TROY — A head-on crash claimed the lives of a grandmother and her granddaughter on Sunday morning.

According to our news partners at WDTN, Lois Ellis, 69, and her granddaughter Gabrielle Ellis, 12, of Union, died at the scene of the crash.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, West Milton Fire Department, and Union Township Life Squad responded to the report of a two-vehicle crash on Nashville Road around 11 a.m. Bystanders on the scene were reportedly performing CPR on one victim.

Deputies, firefighters and medics arrived and found both victims had died at the scene.

Miami County Sheriff’s Office Major Steve Lord said that a black vehicle, driven by Ellis, that was driving north on Nashville Road went left of center, striking a southbound minivan head-on.

The driver of the van sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital by Union Township Life Squad.

Family members, including Gabrielle’s mother, father, and 8-year-old brother were in another vehicle that was in front of the one involved in the crash. The family was reportedly on their way to Piqua for a wrestling meet.

Nashville Road was closed for several hours as deputies worked the crash scene.

A crash reconstruction team from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. It is unknown if weather may have played a factor.
