Hayner to celebrate National Poetry Month



TROY — The public is invited to attend a National Poetry Month Celebration at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 13 at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center, 301 W. Main St., Troy.

There is no cost to attend. The public reading of poetry will feature the winners of Hayner’s 2017 poetry competion. First, second and third place winners, along with honorable mention award recipients in junior high, high school and adult age categories will read their original poems. Refreshments will follow.

The celebration is the final event in Hayner’s 2017 poetry series, coordinated by Dr. David Petreman, a professor of Modern Languages at Wright State University. Petreman’s poetry has been published in many U.S. and Canadian literary journals. In 2007 and 2008 he had three chapbooks published. He recently finished a manuscript of poems about his experiences during 11 stays in Chile. A professor of Spanish and Latin American literature at Wright State University, he is noted for his translations of poems and essays by Chilean poets. He has published three books on the Chilean short story and numerous articles on Latin American Literature. In 2011, Petreman published a bilingual edition of “Candlelight In Quintero/Luz De Vela En Quintero” (Dos Madres Press) and has just published another book in Chili, called “El Témpano do Coloane.” It is a book of essays, interviews and poetry about legendary writer Francisco Coloane.
