TROY — A motorcyclist was transported to Miami Valley Hospital by CareFlight after begin struck from behind by a van in an accident Wednesday afternoon.
The incident was reported at 3:24 p.m. in the 600 block of N. County Road 25-A, Troy near the Little Jacob’s Ladder Learning Center and the county fairgrounds.
According to Deputy Warren Edmondson, the motorcyclist was traveling southbound into the city of Troy and had slowed down due to a stopped Troy City Schools bus in the northbound lane, dropping off children at the daycare.The name of the motorcyclist or the driver at-fault was not available at press time.
A van traveling southbound attempted to stop, locking its brakes for 40-50 feet before striking the motorcyclist from behind ejecting the rider off the bike. Deputy Edmondson said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet and was in and out of consciousness at the time of the incident. He was transported to Upper Valley Medical Center and then transported by CareFlight to Miami Valley for treatment.
The driver of the van, who was not injured, will be cited for assured clear distance. The accident remains under investigation.
SCHOOL BUS TRAFFIC LAWS
Upon meeting or overtaking any bus stopped for the purpose of receiving or discharging school children or people with disabilities, all drivers must stop at least 10 feet from the front or rear of the bus and may not proceed until such bus resumes motion or the driver is signaled to proceed by the school bus driver.
If driving on a 4-lane roadway, the driver need not stop if on the other roadway. Ohio law requires drivers operating a school bus on a road with four or more lanes to drop off or pick up passengers on the side of the road the passenger lives.
Similar to a two-lane road, drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus, either behind or beside it, are required to stop on a road with four or more lanes.
Violations can result in fines up to $500 and a suspended license for up to a year.
