Troy man in custody following standoff

TROY — A Troy man is incarcerated at the Miami County Jail after he discharged his hand gun into the air and then barricaded himself inside his apartment into the early morning hours Saturday.

Stephen Steinle, 66, of Troy, has been charged with third degree discharge of a weapon within city limits, and first degree misdemeanor inducing panic, aggravated menacing and use of a weapon while intoxicated.

According to Capt. Joe Long, Troy Police had to deploy its Tactical Response Team to extract Steinle out of his Windridge apartment shortly after midnight Saturday. Steinle barricaded himself inside his 1500 block of Windridge Place apartment for more than three hours and had refused to cooperate with authorities. The response team fired two rounds of gas into his home around 12:15 a.m. Saturday. He walked out of his apartment 15 minutes later and was placed into custody without further incident.

The incident allegedly began around 9:30 p.m. Friday when Steinle was drinking with neighbors at his Windridge Place apartment near Dorset. According to witnesses, Steinle allegedly used a racial slur and it began an argument outside of the apartment complex. Steinle allegedly went inside his home and brandished a 9 mm hand gun, firing three rounds into the air outside and then locked himself inside his home. No one was injured in the incident.
