Theft suspects quickly apprehended

PIQUA — Two men are in custody in connection with an alleged theft from the Elder-Beerman store at the Miami Valley Centre Mall on Thursday.

According to Piqua Deputy Police Marty Grove, Piqua police were notified of a theft in progress at the store around 10:30 a.m.

Grove said that a male was observed stealing items. When spotted by security, the subject fled the store and was observed getting into a silver Hummer. Grove, who was in the area searching for the suspects, observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on I-75 at the Garbry Road bridge.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Troy Police Department were notified. An OSP unit spotted the suspect vehicle as it exited at the 78-mile marker and proceeded south on County Road 25-A. A stop was initiated as backup units arrived at County Road 25-A and Eldean Road.

Arrested on a charge of theft was Marcus Turnbill, 45, of Piqua who also had multiple theft-related arrest warrants out.

The driver of the Hummer, Randy Peters, 45, was charged with a single count of Complicity to Commit Theft. He was released on his own recognizance.

All of the stolen property was recovered.
