COVINGTON – A small child is safe with family members after allegedly being held hostage at knife-point on Sunday night.
Officers were sent to an apartment on Regency Court around 11 p.m. on a report of a small child being held hostage by a man with a knife.
Covington Police units along with Miami County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the apartment building located at the corner of Mote Drive and Regency Court at the south end of the village.
A standoff ensued when the man refused to hand over the child and surrender.
Chief Lee Harmon of the Covington Police Department said the incident apparently began as a domestic dispute. Following over an hour of talking, the suspect who has not yet been identified, agreed to hand the child over to police. The child was taken to a waiting ambulance where he was checked out for injuries.
When officers entered the apartment to take the suspect into custody, “There was a struggle for the knife he had,” said Harmon, “and he is heading to Miami Valley right now with a knife wound to his abdomen.”
At this point, the relationship between the suspect, infant, and the other person involved in the domestic dispute are unknown.
No officers were injured during the incident which played out over nearly two hours. The suspect’s condition is unknown.
We will have more information on this story as it develops.
