Veterans Museum to present free talk

TROY — In an event that is free and open to the public, five veterans, including Miami Valley Veterans Museum curator Terry Purke, will present the major wars of the republic through authentic equipment collections called “History in a Box.”

Join the troops at the Mayflower today, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. for a journey through history.

Purke will discuss the early days of the patriots, and Rick Egbert will guide viewers through The War Between the States. Life-size boxes of specifically selected memorabilia will be accompanied by narrators Lou Hart for WWI, Mick DeHart for WWII and Korea, and Carl DeSantis for Vietnam.

Aeronautical program offered

TRUY — WACO Learning Center will offer a popular aeronautical program, designed by NASA, to homeschool families with early learners.

Fun with Flight is a collection of STEM learning modules based on children’s books. Each module focuses on a single children’s book, followed by a STEM thematic lesson. Hands-on activities will engage the child as they make discoveries about Gliders in Nature (Form & Function), Balloons (Sinking & Floating), Parachutes (Fluid Thickness & Drag), Kites (Surface Area & Lift), Helicopters and Airplanes (Force & Thrust), and World Flyers (Geography & Global Trade). These lessons will take place from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 13-17 at WACO Air Museum, 1865 S. County Road 25-A, Troy A $40 materials fee will cover the entire week. Parents can register children ages 6-8 by calling WACO Air Museum at 335-9226.

Kayaking classes offered

TROY — The Piqua branch of the Miami County YMCA will be offering a kayaking class on Saturday, Nov. 11 from noon to 3 p.m. This class is designed for beginning kayakers who want to learn the basics of the sport.

The fee for the class is $15 for YMCA members and $20 for non YMCA members. Class size is limited to six participants, and you must be at least 14 years of age to participate.

The class will be taught by Jeff Lange a local kayaking enthusiast who is also a certified kayak instructor with the American Canoe Association.

Kayaking is a popular and fun water sport that individuals can easily learn and do. There are many opportunities for renting a kayak around the Dayton area, as well as many waterways to go kayaking on.

THS Creative Writers to host book sale

TIPP CITY — Tippecanoe High School students are sorting through boxes and bags of donated books in preparation for the upcoming book sale.

Student editors of the high school’s literary journal, Inferno, are hosting the event. It is a book lover’s bargain paradise. Paperbacks are $1 each; hardbacks are $2 each.

The sale is open Friday, Nov. 10 from 4-6 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The sale takes place at the Tippecanoe High School Library. Shoppers should enter the school through the main door and immediately turn right to access the library.

All proceeds help offset the costs of printing and publishing the Inferno.

The student-run publication highlights high school writers and editors. Last year student editors read 134 submissions. They selected 53 written and artistic entries for the 2016-2017 edition.

The group also hosts a Night Write and Book Release.
