MIAMI COUNTY — Troy Strawberry Festival General Chairman Eric Roetter’s vision for the 2018 is strikes a familiar tune with a sweet spin on the definition of “lollapalooza.”

At the Troy Eagles Campground, “Strawberry Palooza” was unveiled as Roetter’s theme for next June’s festival. The Troy Strawberry Festival draws more than 200,000 people to Troy each summer — much like outdoor concerts or other large scale events that promise “paloozas” of fun, food and festivities.

Roetter shared how his son, Chris, helped with the design of the logo, which features several symbols sprinkled throughout the graphic.

The strawberry features 42 stars for the 42nd year of the festival, the musical notes pay homage to his children and grandson, the star on the guitar is for his wife, Kathi, and the two birds in the skyline represent his late parents.

Roetter shared how he and Kathi began their journey to help with the festival when his son, Zac, won Li’l Mr. Strawberry in 1999. The doting pageant parents then took on responsibilities such as helping with the Friday night bed races before moving on to help various activities and behind-the-scenes operations of the festival itself.

“I’m very, very excited to be this far ahead this year,” Roetter said.

Roetter said his focus for the festival is to bring back live entertainment, including “surprises” throughout the festival. Roetter said the festival’s musical lineup is nearly complete, well ahead of the festival’s kick-off on the weekend of June 2, 2018.

Roetter also unveiled the 2020 chairman as Deb Char during the ceremony. Matt Watkins handed over the duties of the festival after a successful 2017 year. The 2017 Troy Strawberry Festival raised more than $370,000 — the most funds ever — for Miami County non-profits over the weekend.

Watson also reminded Roetter that he had one of the festival’s anomalies with no rain recorded during last year’s festival.
