Staff Report

TROY — The community officially welcomed the holidays on Friday with the annual Grand Illumination events in downtown.

The evening kicked off with the Kris Kringle Market located at the Rec, offering people the opportunity to purchase quality, handmade gifts at low prices. Carriage rides also were held on the Public Square. Stations serving free warm drinks, baked goods, and ornaments were available the entire evening for residents to enjoy.

“The Grand Illumination brings an enhanced sense of community and holiday cheer. It’s both comforting and magical,” said Nicole Loy, executive director of Troy Main Street. “This is a wonderful opportunity to bring together the entire family.”

Musical performances included the Troy City Schools’ American Sign Language students signing and singing along to holiday tunes and the Melody Men Barbershop Chorus, who returned for a second year.

Troy Mayor Mike Beamish perfomed the Troy rendition of “The Month Before Christmas”, before introducing Santa and Mrs. Claus on stage for the “Grand Illumination.”

“All 14 years I’ve been part of this, the most amazing thing about all this is the people.” Mayor Beamish said. “In years past, we’ve had snow, we’ve had wind, we’ve had cold temperatures, and people still come out. Watching the little kids light up when all the lights finally come on is so exciting. It’s powerful to watch all the people who turn out for the Illumination each year and be a part of the celebration.”

The highlight of the night wrapped up events when Santa and Mrs. Claus were escorted downtown in a fire truck to light the Christmas tree and the rest of downtown decorations.

Santa and Mrs. Claus made their way to “Santa’s House” in Prouty Plaza shortly after, where children lined up to meet Santa for photos and candy canes.

The Grand Illumination serves as the lead-in for “Shop Small Saturday”, going on through daytime hours on Sat, Nov. 25 in local shops and restaurants.
