Staff Reports

CASSTOWN — The Miami East Local Schools Board of Education accepted letters of retirement from two long-time staff members at its regular meeting on Feb. 16.

The board approved to accept junior high guidance counselor Sandra Finkes and high school computer science teacher Kevin Pyers’ letters of retirement, both effective May 31.

According to Superintendent Dr. Todd Rappold, Finkes has taught for 34 years and Kevin Pyers taught 32 years — all at Miami East Local Schools for both educators.

The board also approved Terri Robbin’s letter of resignation effective Feb. 5; to hire Ken DeWeese as a bus driver; and Brooke Vanover as a classified substitute for the 2015-2016.

The board also approved a memorandum of understanding between the board and the Miami East Education Association to clarify language in the 2015-2019 agreement. The MOU was made in the severance pay section of the agreement to change “within” to “prior to” in regards to severance pay.

Due to a scheduling overlap, the board was informed the treasurer would need to transition from an annual audit to a biennial audit for the fiscal year.

The board was also informed the Ohio’s Options for High School Diploma information is available online on the high school’s website. It is the second year the state of Ohio switched from the Ohio Graduation Test to a point system to receive a high school diploma.

The Miami East Education Foundation will host its annual fundraiser VikingFest on Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Miami East Elementary/Junior High building. Events include baking contests, carnival games, food, bounce houses, a silent auction, Little Miss and Mr. VikingFest, student art displays, and stage entertainment. All proceeds benefit Miami East students through the Miami East Education Foundation.

The board also approved the following supplemental contracts: Barry Coomes — head boys baseball Coach; Nick Kirk — boys JV baseball coach; Preston Elifritz — girls head varsity track coach; Michaela Nenninger — head girls softball coach; Tabitha Nenninger — JV girls softball coach; Trevor Nenninger and Joshua Mayfield — volunteer softball coaches; Steve Karnehm — head boys track coach; Levin Karnehm — assistant boys track coach; Darrell Davis — volunteer baseball coach; Ken DeWeese — musical instrumental director; Gary Church — head track coach; and Zach Tyre — assistant junior high track.

The next board of education meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 21 at the high school.
