TIPP CITY — At their meeting Monday night, the Tipp City school board approved the reinstatement of classified staff salary schedules and increases.
“Essentially, it would increase the cost of living adjustment on the base from 1.5 percent to 2 percent for the classified staff for this current school year,” Superintendent Dr. Gretta Kumpf said.
This action will affect the district’s 105 classified employees and would have an impact of about $21,000 on the budget, according to treasurer Dave Stevens.
The decision is retroactive to an employee’s first day of work in the 2015-16 contract year. Employees may still earn performance pay up to an additional 1 percent, Kumpf said.
An additional one step will also be restored for each currently employed staff member in the district that did not receive step increases during the the 2011-12 contract year step freeze, Kumpf added. To get that increase, a staff member must have worked 120 days during the 2010-11 contract year in the same position.
During the citizen comment portion of the meeting, resident and former board candidate Don Watson was removed from the meeting by a Tipp City police officer.
Board president Carla Frame asked Watson to sit down several times after he refused to adhere to the three minute comment time limit set at the beginning of the meeting. When Watson continued to speak after repeated warnings from the board, board member Frank Maus requested police assistance in escorting Watson from the meeting — a policy outlined in the board’s bylaws.
In other business, Kumpf mentioned that teachers contract negotiations are still ongoing and that the board will meet with Tipp City Education Association members on Friday.
The board also approved Jim Smerz as interim high school athletic director.
Smerz, who previously worked for Centerville schools, said he was looking forward to working with the district and the athletes.
