PIQUA — Dealing with dementia or Alzheimer’s in one’s family does not have to mean embarking through uncharted territory. The Piqua Chamber of Commerce’s Women in Networking group is opening up their next meeting on Thursday, July 16, to anyone who wants to hear renowned speaker and author Laura Wayman discuss dementia and Wayman’s “loving approach to dementia care.”
“There are so many people who are affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s in our community,” Liz Carroll, member of the Women in Networking’s steering committee, said.
Laura Wayman is a keynote speaker, trainer, and gerontologist with a degree in Gerontology and a Social Services Designee Certification. Most notably, Wayman is also the author of “A Loving Approach to Dementia Care; Making Meaningful Connections with the Person Who Has Alzheimer’s Disease or Other Dementia or Memory Loss.”
“She’s also known as the dementia-whisperer,” Carroll said.
In 2001, Wayman was the owner and operator of The Dementia Whispers, Inc. Wayman worked as an entrepreneur prior to her career as a speaker and author.
Wayman will be speaking on dementia, including the differences between normal aging and dementia. Wayman will also discuss how to create a positive environment for both someone suffering from a form of dementia and the person’s caregiver. The caregiver cannot be forgotten in these situations as the caregiver can suffer from higher amounts of stress.
Attendees will also be learning about how they can have successful interactions with people living with dementia who may also be dealing with anxiety and stress from their disease.
“If you are trying to express that you’re hungry but you really don’t know how to express that anymore, it creates a really high anxiety in people,” Carroll said. Wayman will teach how to redirect those people living with dementia in order to help communicate with them and understand their needs.
“It’s got to be scary to not know what’s going on,” Carroll said.
Wayman will be speaking from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at at the Piqua Country Club. Those who wish to attend can RSVP with Sharon Ford at the Piqua Chamber of Commerce at (937) 773-2765. It will be a lunch meeting, so lunch will cost $8 for Women in Networking members and $12 for non-members.
