District soils contest held
NEW BREMEN — On Sept. 30, members of the Miami East-MVCTC FFA Chapter competed in the District 5 Soils Judging Contest in Auglaize County, north of New Bremen.
The Urban Soils team consisted of Zach Kronenberger, Jessica Gillum, Maci Krites, Kaitlyn Hawes, and Zachery Kowalak. The team placed fifth out of 20 teams. Zach Kronenberger was the highest placing individual from Miami East placing seventh out of 130 individuals. Jessica Gillum placed 17th overall. The team qualified for the State Urban Soils Career Development event in October.
The Rural Soils team consisted of Jessica Copeland, Seth Teeters, Kyle Elifritz, Abbey Koontz, Lane Mergler, Dakota Bashore, and Baily Buck. The team placed 21 out of 30 teams. Jessica Copeland was the high individual from Miami East placing 67th out 201 contestants.
The contest consisted of evaluating three soils pit for slope, erosion, drainage, depth, and soil texture.
The contestants took a written test and answered questions from the soil survey.
Halloween party set
WEST MILTON – Milton-Union Public Library wants to say “Hello Halloween!” with its annual kids Halloween party 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15.
Children’s Librarian Wendy Heisey will be hosting the evening of Halloween themed books, bingo with prizes, and spooky snacks. Costumes are not required, but definitely encouraged. The kids will share their costumes and put on a parade through the library.
This program is geared towards grades kindergarten through fifth.
