Police Memorial Day planned

MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #58 is inviting the public to attend the annual Police Memorial Day Service on May 4, at noon on the Plaza at the Miami County Courthouse. The Miami County Police Honor Guard will open the ceremony with the presentation of the flags.

The Miami County Police Memorial was dedicated in 1999 to Miami County law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Officers memoralized are:

• Marshall Harvey Hake, Covington PD, Jan. 12, 1917

• Patrolman George Eickmeyer, Tipp City PD, Sept. 17, 1945

• Lt. Noah Studebaker, Piqua PD, Oct. 17, 1957

• Patrolman Jan Mulder II, Piqua PD, Aug. 11, 1970

• Sgt. William R. Morris, Miami County Sheriff’s Office, Nov. 22, 1972

• Detective Robert Taylor, Piqua PD, Nov. 3, 1982

• Sgt. Robert L. Elliott, Miami County Sheriff’s Office, Feb. 25, 1987.

Women of Excellence noms sought

MIAMI COUNTY — The deadline for nominations for the 20th annual YWCA Women of Excellence and Young Woman of Tomorrow Awards is Monday, May 16, at 5 p.m. or postmarked on May 16. Nomination forms are available at the YWCA Piqua, 418 N. Wayne St., by phone at (937) 773-6626, or by e-mail to Leesa Baker

The awards, established by the YWCA in 1997, have been given annually to recognize women in Miami County who have distinguished themselves in their careers and/or in civic and community activities. The honorees must reside, be employed, or be active in Miami County. An individual, a group, or an organization may submit nominations.

The Young Woman of Tomorrow honoree must be between 16-22 years of age as of May 16, 2016.

This year’s honorees will be selected by a committee of impartial judges composed of men and women from throughout Miami County. Awards will be presented at a gala luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 20.

YWCA annual meeting set

PIQUA — Robin Davis, food writer and author, will be the featured speaker for the YWCA Piqua’s 97th annual meeting on Wednesday, April 13. The program, which is free and open to the public, begins at 11 a.m. followed by a noon luncheon ($6 per person).

A UVMC nurse will be available from 10:15-11 a.m. for free blood pressure and glucose screenings. The YWCA is handicapped-accessible.

The meeting will include the introduction of new board members. Reservations are required by Monday, April 11, by calling the YWCA at (937) 773-6626.
