Five things successful people do before 8 a.m. (and why I don’t)

You can always count on someone to share an article and for about 50 other friends to do the same. If it weren’t for viral content on social media, what would we all talk about and comment on?


Recently, there’s been an article published on Forbes.com circulating my friends list. The piece was written in early October, so it’s fairly new and relevant, and is titled “Five things super successful people do before 8 a.m.”


The idea behind this article is great and honestly, I’m kind of surprised this has been popping up in my newsfeed so much. It’s not that I don’t have business-minded friends, actually, well, it is that I don’t have business-minded friends. I have college friends, softball students, a few coworkers, family members and then a lot of moms gracing my Facebook friend list. There are a few professionals strewn about in there, but they weren’t the ones sharing this article (maybe they’re already off being super successful somewhere).


What I found about this article is that most of my friends sharing it were using it as a way not to just be successful in business, but how to be successful and happier in their lives – whether they be stay at home parents or college students.


There’s one important thing I learned about myself after reading through this list of what CEO’s and government officials do before 8 a.m. – apparently, I’m never, ever going to be successful – or happy.


The first thing super successful individuals do before 8 a.m. is workout. Yep, all these CEOs and government officials are rolling out of bed to exercise. Judging by the health status of many of them, however, I’m wondering how much time they’re spending working out and how much they’re spending chit chatting with other super successful people. Now, I actually am able to do this on occasion. Three days a week I roll my butt out of bed and make it to the gym by 6 a.m. to burn some calories. This, however, has very little to do with my desire to be successful and very much to do with my desire to lose weight. Or, at the very least, not gain more.


The next thing super successful people do is map out their day. Yep, while they’re jogging on the treadmill they’re making an outline for how they’re going to spend their day. I don’t even bother doing this – I have children. Sure, I know Pearyn has to be at school by 9 a.m. and I know I work from 7:30-4:30, but other than that, there’s no real mapping out of my day. Sometimes it includes Braeburn pooping 15 times, which, really takes a lot of time away from playing the Candy Crush I mapped out.


After mapping out their day, super successful people eat breakfast – not just any breakfast – but a healthy one. Apparently this also is the time they connect with spouses and kids before heading out the door. Little Jimmy and Suzy sit around the table with CEO mom or dad and eat some oatmeal and bond. I’m certainly not opposed to this, but for all of us to eat together at the same time, we’d have to be up at 5 a.m. with breakfast on the table. And then that would get in the way of our working out before 8 a.m. Decisions, decisions.


As if mapping out your day isn’t enough planning, super successful people also practice visualization. This means taking some time to “see” what you’ve got ahead of you, and to visualize it going according to plan. Apparently it helps you keep a “positive” view. Unfortunately, I’m not sure visualizing dirty diapers and getting dinner on the table is enough to keep me successful.


And lastly, after all this planning and visualizing, super successful people like to make their day top heavy. This, I can get on board with. I’m so guilty of procrastinating it’s not even funny. And while it’s true I usually do my best work under a deadline, there are some things like grocery shopping and meal planning that would be nice to get out of the way earlier, you know, say not 45 minutes before dinner should be served. If getting the stuff you really don’t want to do out of the way first will make me more successful, count me in.


Of course, if they can just come up with a way to have me avoid all the hard stuff all together and still be successful I’d be down with that, too.
