Trojan track teams sweep 1st meet

TROY — The Troy tennis team kicked off the season with an easy win Tuesday, shutting out Stebbins 5-0 at home.


At first singles, Luke Oaks defeated Kyle Talley 6-1, 6-0. At second singles, Conner Oaks defeated Lance Brown 6-4, 6-2. At third singles, Matt Schmitt defeated Darik Grover 6-0, 6-1.


At first doubles, Matt Alexander and Ian Stutz defeated Jordan Yong and John Szanto 6-1, 6-1. At second doubles, Aaron Coon and Carter Hench defeated Fenton Clawson and Mike Hoff 6-0, 6-2.


“It was a good start,” Troy coach Mark Goldner said. “The team played well, keeping their composure and fighting through the windy conditions.”


Troy (1-0) travels to Tecumseh Thursday.

Troy Up and Running


TROY — The Troy Trojans swept their opening day track and field meet — even if it was a couple of days late — as the boys (105 points) and girls (92.5) both won the inaugural Up and Running Invitational on Monday, a meet that was rescheduled after Saturday’s inclement weather.


Gracie Huffman picked up three individual wins on the girls’ side, winning the 100 (13.29 seconds), the 200 (27.72 seconds) and the 400 (1:04.21). Shanelle Byrd was second in the 100 (13.65 seconds) and 200 (28.63 seconds). Abby Pence also won a pair of races, the 800 (2:45.9) and 1,600 (6:05.35). Morgan Cockerham was first in the 3,200 (13:09.14) as Troy swept the top four places in the race, and Abby Brinkman won the pole vault (9-6).


Meredith Haddad scored all 10 of Troy Christian’s girls points, winning the long jump with a leap of 16-6.


On the boys side, returning state placer Nathan Fleischer won the pole vault by clearing 14-6. Alex Dalton and Seth Overla finished one-two in both the shot put and discus. Dalton won the shot (45-3.75) and discus (142-2), while Overla was second in the shot (43-2) and discus (126-10). Miles Hibbler won the high jump (5-8) as well as the 100 (11.58 seconds), Josh Williams swept the 110 hurdles (18.24 seconds) and 300 hurdles (44.54 seconds), and Stephen Jones (9:53.49) and Blake Guillozet (10:18.81) were one-two in the 3,200.


Troy Christian’s Zac Garver won the 1,600 (4:35.61), with Troy’s Troy Schultz right behind in second (4:36.8). Garver was also third in the 3,200.


East Sweeps At Arcanum


ARCANUM — The Miami East Vikings swept a seven-team meet at Arcanum that serves as an early preview of some of the Cross County Conference’s competition, with the Viking boys posting 129 points and the girls posting 148.


Colton Holicki won the 100 (11.73 seconds), 200 and 400 (53.76 seconds), while Mack Rose won the pole vault by clearing 13-6. Trey Harbour won the 110 hurdles (17.99 seconds).


Bethel’s boys were runners-up with 115 points. Jason Clendening won the 300 hurdles (45.12 seconds), the 4x100 relay team won (47.72 seconds), Jacob Tumey won the high jump (6-0) and Devin Hazely won the long jump (19-11).


Newton’s boys were fifth with 55 points. Matt Hart won the 200 (23.59 seconds).


Marie Ewing won the 800 (2:34.98) and 1,600 (5:49.6), Renee DeFord won the 400 (1:08.3), Lorenza Savini won the 3,200 (13:10.75), Ashley Current won the discus (106-7), the 4x400 team (4:40.39) and the 4x100 relay team won (54.46 seconds).


Bethel’s girls were fourth with 75 points. Maddie Ellerbrock won the 200 (28.5 seconds), high jump (4-8) and long jump (14-7.5).


Newton’s girls were sixth with 38 points. Morgan Miller won the 100 (13.91 seconds).
