MIAMI COUNTY — Andy Holderman had lots of questions to answer entering this season.
His Tippecanoe girls basketball team answered them all season long, and as a result Holderman was honored with the Division II All-Southwest District Coach of the Year award Wednesday when the all-district teams were announced.
Tippecanoe went 23-4 in Holderman’s second year with the team, going undefeated in Greater Western Ohio Conference American North Division play and winning a division title in its first year as a member of the league. The Devils were ousted in the regional semifinal by two-time defending state champion Alter on Tuesday, the team that had beaten them in the regional final the last two seasons prior.
The Devils, who graduated a large amount of seniors off of last year’s regional finalist team, had three players named to the all-district team. Junior Allison Mader, who averaged 14.7 points per game this season, was named to the third team, while senior Taylor Prall and junior Cali Stewart both earned honorable mention.
In Division III, Milton-Union sophomore Kristen Dickison was named third team after averaging 13.5 points per game this season, and teammate Taylor Jacobs earned honorable mention. Miami East’s Haley Howard also earned all-district honorable mention.
In Division IV, Covington sophomore Sammi Whiteman was named to the all-district second team after scoring 18.7 points per game this season. Newton junior Tatum McBride was named to the third team after scoring 19.9 points per game this season. And also earning a spot on the third team was Bradford senior Mandi Bates, who averaged 18 points per game this year. Troy Christian’s Hailey Peters and Lehman’s Grace Monnin and Hannah Fogt each earned honorable mention.
On the boys side, Bethel’s Caleb South was the top Miami County athlete honored, earning a spot on the Division III All-Southwest District first team. The junior, who scored his 1,000th career point in the first game of the season, went on to average 24.6 points this year and most recently scored a career-high 46 in the Bees’ sectional championship victory over Anna. Bethel faces Roger Bacon in the district final Thursday night at UD Arena.
Teammate Ryan Rose also earned honorable mention in Division III, as did Miami East’s Logan West.
In Division I, Troy’s Ryan McClurg and Zach Reichelderfer and Piqua’s Ben Schmiesing all earned honorable mention.
In Division II, Tippecanoe’s Zach Bonifas earned honorable mention.
In Division IV, Troy Christian’s James Anderson and Lehman’s Kam Lee and Dylan Arnold all earned honorable mention.
