UNION CITY — One game into the new season and the Newton girls basketball team is already setting school records.

One quarter, even.

The Indians jumped out to a 28-5 lead after the first eight minutes of their season opener Thursday at Mississinawa Valley, setting a new school record for most points in one quarter as Newton (1-0, 1-0 Cross County Conference) put away the Blackhawks, 63-27.

Tatum McBride scored a game-high 29 points, knocking down five 3-pointers and going 8 for 9 from the free throw line on the night. She also added eight steals and six rebounds to lead the Indians past Mississinawa Valley (0-2, 0-1 CCC).

Newton hosts Russia Monday.

Miami East 69,

TC North 40

LEWISBURG — After being held below 20 points for the first time the season against Tippecanoe on Wednesday, Miami East’s Morgan Haney dropped 27 points on Tri-County North Thursday to help the Vikings open Cross County Conference play with a 69-40 victory.

Haney hit three of the Vikings’ (3-1, 1-0 CCC) four 3-pointers on the night, and Camryn Miller hit the other and added 11 points. Haley Howard scored six points and Bailey Miller, Maria Staton and Mikayla Schaffner each scored six.

Miami East travels to West Liberty-Salem Saturday.

Covington 53,

WEST ALEXANDRIA — Covington’s Sammi Whiteman scored a game-high 17 points Thursday night to lead the unbeaten Buccaneers (3-0, 1-0 Cross County Conference) to a 53-25 victory at Twin Valley South.

Jordan Crowell and Lilli Hamilton also reached double digits for the Buccs with 11 points apiece as Covington jumped out to an 18-2 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

Covington travels to Versailles Saturday.

Bradford 41,

Ansonia 40

BRADFORD — Bradford was able to hold on in its Cross County Conference opener Thursday night at home, defeating Ansonia 41-40 to improve to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in league play.

Skipp Miller led the Railroaders with 16 points, Chelsea Gill chipped in nine and Bianca Keener scored six in the win.

Bradford travels to Covington Monday.

Lehman 64,

Catholic Central 61 OT

SIDNEY —Grace Monnin led Lehman (2-1) with 25 points and 12 rebounds as the Cavaliers held off Catholic Central in overtime Thursday night, 64-61.

Lehman hosts Elgin Dec. 14.

Preble Shawnee 44,

Milton-Union 34

CAMDEN — Milton-Union competed with Southwestern Buckeye League Buckeye Division rival Preble Shawnee Thursday night in its season opener, but in the end the Arrows (2-1, 2-0 SWBL Buckeye) — who already had two games under their belts — were able to hold onto a slim advantage for a 44-34 victory.

Kristen Dickison led the Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1 SWBL Buckeye) with 11 points, with Beyonce Bobbitt and Morgan Nemeth both adding nine.

Milton-Union hosts Madison Saturday.

Arcanum 47,

Bethel 35

BRANDT — The Bethel Bees couldn’t get a victory in Corey Steinke’s debut as coach Thursday night, as Arcanum (2-1, 1-0 Cross County Conference) pulled away for a 47-35 victory.

Alaina Hawthorn led the Bees with 12 points as Bethel (0-1, 0-1 CCC) trailed only 9-6 after one quarter but fell behind 27-12 at halftime and couldn’t recover.

Bethel travels to Bradford Thursday.
