TIPP CITY — For the past four season, Miami East has owned the Division III district.
Make that five.
The Viking volleyball team wrapped up its fifth straight D-III district title Saturday afternoon at Tippecanoe High School, sweeping an outmatched Badin team 25-19, 25-6, 25-12 to advance to next week’s regional tournament.
The first two district titles the Vikings won, they ended up winning D-III state titles. For the past two seasons, though, they have been knocked out in the regional semifinal round — both times by Versailles, who also won a district title Saturday.
Jonni Parker had 15 kills and 10 assists and Kyndall Hellyer had 14 kills and five digs to lead the Viking offense. Carly Gump had 19 assists, five aces and four digs, Lindsey Black had 11 digs and Jillian Wesco had nine digs.
“I am very proud of the way this team has come together this year,” Miami East coach Brian Bensman said. “They have made a commitment to getting better, and it has showed. We lost three games early in the year and worked through some lineup changes and have started to put things together in a big way. Each player has an important role on the team, and we are all getting better at our role and trusting each other.”
Miami East, the No. 2 seed from its sectional bracket, will face top-seeded Anna at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fairmont’s Trent Arena in the regional semifinal. Anna swept Roger Bacon in its title match. The winner of Wednesday’s match will face the winner between Versailles and Newark Catholic in Saturday’s regional final.
