4 Miami County basketball players earn All-Ohio honors

MIAMI COUNTY — A fitting end to two quality basketball careers.

A good start to two young ones.

Four Miami County basketball players — two boys and two girls, with one senior and one underclassman each — were named All-Ohio this week and last, with Miami East’s Damien Mackesy taking the highest honor this year with a spot on the third team.

Mackesy, a senior, led the Vikings to the Division III district final, hitting a pair of clutch free throws in the closing seconds of the sectional title game against Versailles to break a tie and give Miami East the win. His free throw shooting also helped the Vikings defeat defending state champion Tri-Village during the regular season and earn a share of the Cross County Conference title.

Bethel sophomore Caleb South also took All-Ohio honors in Division III, earning honorable mention. South followed a stellar freshman season by leading the Bees to a sectional championship and a berth in the district final.

Last week, the girls All-Ohio teams were announced. Tippecanoe senior Aubrey Cox closed out her career by earning honorable mention in Division II. Cox played an integral role in the Red Devils’ back-to-back trips to the regional finals this year and last, most recently leading the Devils with a season-high 21 points and 13 rebounds in their regional semifinal win over River Valley this season.

Also earning honorable mention in Division III was Miami East freshman Morgan Haney. From the point guard position, Haney led the Vikings to a sectional championship with an upset victory over top-seeded Anna, helping the Vikings reach the district final this season.
