TROY — For the past eight years, hundreds of kids from across the region have competed in the Troy Kids Triathlon.

After last year’s event, a parent approached event founder Cheryl Chaney — herself a decorated triathlete who has competed multiple times at the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii — and asked about the possibility of forming a kids triathlon team in Troy.

This past April, seven local kids, ages 5-11, came together to from the inaugural Troy Junior Tri Team. They team members met with Coach Chaney three times a week for four months to swim, bike and run. Not only did the kids practice, but their mothers participated in the biking and running, as well.

The team competed in a three-race series over the summer at the Fun in the SUn, Troy Kids Triathlon and Springfield Triathlon events.

That series led up to the recent 2016 USAT Youth and Junior National Championships in West Chester, at which the Troy Junior Tri Team participated. More than 1,000 competitors from across the United States competed at the event.
