Tournament games begin Monday


Three area teams earn top seeds

MIAMI COUNTY — The Tippecanoe and Lehman baseball teams, along with the Newton softball team, all drew top seeds in their respective sectional tournament brackets.

Tournament play opens Monday in both sports.

Tippecanoe earned a top seed in the Division II Kenton Ridge sectional, while Lehman while coaches voted Lehman No. 1 in the Division IV Troy sectional. Newton received the top seed in the Division IV Sidney sectional bracket.

Here’s a look at first-round pairings for all 21 area baseball and softball teams. All games are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and all are, of course, weather permitting:

Baseball

Division I

Troy, the No. 9 seed in the Division I Dayton sectional will host No. 11 Tecumseh Tuesday. The winner of that game will player the winner of No. 5 Fairborn vs. No. 20 Belmont Thursday.

Piqua, the No. 12 seed in the Dayton sectional, will travel to Bellefontaine Tuesday. The winner will move to face No. 2 Springboro, which took a bye in the first round, Thursday.

Division II

Tippecanoe, the top seed in the bracket, took a bye through the first round. Thursday, the Red Devils will host the winner of No. 5 Springfield Shawnee vs. No. 6 Urbana.

Division III

Miami East, the No. 8 seed in the Division III Dayton sectional, will travel to No. 7 Greenon Monday. The winner will play the winner of No. 13 Brookville vs. No. 14 Preble Shawnee Wednesday.

Milton-Union, the No. 10 seed, will travel to No. 9 Dayton Christian Monday, while No. 11 Bethel hosts No. 12 Arcanum Monday. The winners of those two games will play Wednesday.

Division IV

Lehman took a bye through the first round of the Troy sectional. The Cavaliers will host the winner of No. 6 Mechanicsburg vs. No. 11 Fairlawn Wednesday.

Covington, the No. 8 seed in the Troy sectional, travels to No. 2 Russia Wednesday. A win in that game would send Covington to the May 17 sectional title game.

In the Division IV Dayton sectional Newton earned the No. 2 seed and took a bye through the first round. The Indians will host the winner of No. 11 Cedarville vs. No. 14 Legacy Christian Wednesday.

Troy Christian, the No. 10 seed in the Dayton sectional, will travel to No. 7 Franklin-Monroe Monday. The winner will move on to face No. 5 Bradford — which took a bye through the first round — Wednesday.

Softball

Division I

Troy was seeded No. 19 in the Dayton 3 sectional and took a bye. The Trojans will meet the winner of No. 9 Tecumseh vs. No. 15 Beavercreek Wednesday.

Piqua, the No. 17 seed in the Dayton 2 sectional, travels to No. 6 Springboro Monday. The winner plays the winner of No. 13 Fairborn vs. No. 14 Sidney.

Division II

Tippecanoe, the No. 5 seed in the Dayton 3 sectional, hosts No. 17 Meadowdale Tuesday. The winner faces No. 1 Monroe, which took a bye through the first round, Thursday.

Division III

Milton-Union, the No. 9 seed in the Northmont sectional, travels to Northeastern Monday, with the winner moving on to face No. 3 Indian Lake Wednesday.

Bethel, the No. 12 seed, travels to No. 1 Northwestern Monday. The winner faces No. 13 Miami East, which took a bye through the first round, Wednesday.

Division IV

Top-seeded Newton took a bye through the first round of the Sidney 1 sectional. Thursday, the Indians will host the winner of No. 11 Lehman at No. 10 Jackson Center. Lehman plays Jackson Center Tuesday.

Also in the Sidney 1 sectional, No. 4 Covington hosts No. 12 Fort Loramie Thursday. A win would put Covington in the sectional title game.

In the Sidney 3 sectional, No. 8 Bradford hosts No. 13 Mississinawa Valley Tuesday, with the winner moving on to face No. 2 Russia Thursday.
