TROY — Under cloudy skies, the Thomas Frydell Memorial Junior tennis tournament began Wednesday at Troy Community Park.
In the boys 18-under singles bracket, Genki Masunga beat Danny Lins 6-1, 6-1, while Justin Ayers beat John Wehrkamp 6-1, 6-1. Also, Branson Leigeber beat Joshua Galloway. Nick Brumbaugh, Brannan McCabe, Jackson Goodall, Josh Brown and Nathan Kleptz all received first-round byes.
In the boys 14-under singles bracket, Noah George beat Matt Bess 6-0, 6-0; Kessler Hachenberger beat Aaron Davis 6-2, 6-0. George and Hachenberger will play in the championship match today.
In the boys 12-under singles bracket, Benjamin Iddings beat Joshua Partee 6-2, 7-5 in one quarterfinal, while Yasashi Masunga beat Truman Howell 6-1, 6-1 in another quarterfinal. Cameron Davis and Nicholas Von Krosigk both received byes through the quarterfinals.
In the boys 18-under doubles bracket, Kleptz and Brumbaugh beat Leigeber and Galloway 6-1, 6-1.
In the girls 18-under age group, Amelia Zweizig beat Hailey Taylor 6-2, 6-0. Xia Lin beat Hannah Fugate 6-0, 6-4 and Sidney Bailey beat Emma Kazmaier 6-1, 6-4. Olivia Reek received a bye through the first round. Zweizig was scheduled to face Reek in one semifinal Thursday, while Lin would play Bailey in the other. The finals are scheduled for today.
In the girls 14-under singles tournament, Kylee Ayers advanced to the second round with a default victory Wednesday.
In the girls 18-under doubles bracket, Lauryn Williams and Isabel Hailey beat Ayers and Blythe Johnson 6-0, 6-2.
