TROY- The 2016 Troy Strawberry Festival Diaper Derby took place Sunday at Center Stage on the levy. Families from surrounding cities paid $25 so their babies come out to race across a rug for prizes. The races were judged by the Strawberry Queen, Jasmeen Gill, as well as the queen’s court.
The babies were required to start behind a line on one side of the rug and crawl to the other side. In order for a baby to win they had to have at least one hand cross the finish line.
Before the races began, there was a costume contest. The winner of the contest was 7 month-old Autumn Carey, whose father won the contest twenty five years ago. The winner was dressed as a festive strawberry herself.
The babies took many methods to get across the finish line; some babies crawled, some hopped on their knees, and some even rolled. Their parents, or what their parents were holding was the children’s’ motivation to cross the finish line.
After many heats had passed, the final race was left— all the winners from previous heats raced to the finish line together. The babies raced to their parents on the other side of the rug, but there could only be one winner.
One-year-old, Luke Corerstone was awarded a $25 Kohl’s gift card for crossing the finish line third. Ian Martin was awarded second place, earning a $30 gift card to Kohl’s. Ten month old Malone Lock from West Milton crossed the finish line first, the West Milton family was awarded a $40 gift card to Kohl’s.
