TIPP CITY — When Andrea and Nick Hoover wanted to expand their business, the owners of Coldwater Cafe knew they wanted to do something special.
“We wanted to do something different,” Andrea Hoover said. “We weren’t really interested in doing a second location of a restaurant or making the restaurant bigger.”
Out of that desire to provide the community with something unique, Bodega Wine and Specialty Foods Market was born.
“We felt like this was a really nice complement to the restaurant and something that was needed in Tipp City,” she said.
Located right next door to Coldwater Cafe, Bodega — a Spanish word for a small grocery or wine store — offers a variety of specialty foods and wine, carefully selected to provide shoppers with options they won’t find anywhere else.
“We have a full selection of wine, both red and white. Our manager tasted and handpicked every label that’s in there,” Hoover said.
Bodega offers more than 200 different labels in a range of prices, she added.
To go with those wines, Bodega also offers everything needed for the perfect cheese plate, including charcuterie meats and cheeses, as well as jams and jellies and a variety of crackers and breads.
In searching for the best specialty food items to stock, Hoover looked for brands that aren’t readily available in other stores. She’s tasted nearly everything on offer in the store and selected all the items herself.
“If you can find it in your local grocery store, you probably won’t find it here,” Hoover said. “There are a few exceptions to that, products that I love and I know the community would love.”
The store offers selection of wellness and nutritional products, such as protein powders, snack bars, and essential oils. Hoover has made a point of including vegan, gluten free, allergy-friendly and non-GMO options.
In addition to packaged foods, Bodega also offers freshly prepared foods from the restaurant next door.
Though Coldwater Cafe’s popular chicken salad will be a regular offering, items in the case will change frequently, Hoover said.
So far, Bodega has offered things such as meatloaf, enchiladas, quiche and barbecue — and those offerings have sold out quickly, Hoover added.
“We have done our best to set ourselves apart,” Hoover said. “We’ve done our best to have wine labels that aren’t readily available. … What we have is not the same stuff you’d find elsewhere.”
Bodega is located at 27 E. Main St. in Tipp City, right next door to Coldwater Cafe. It is open six days a week, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
