DAYTON — Community Blood Center is thankful this Thanksgiving season for donors like Tipp City’s Howard Guscar, who made his milestone 235th lifetime donation on the eve of Thanksgiving, Wednesday, Nov. 23 at the Dayton CBC.
At age 72, Howard is a regular platelet donor, usually making a double platelet donation every two weeks.
“I’m on a two-week schedule,” he said. “I like Wednesday mornings because it’s not too busy. I always do a double platelet donation. ”
CBC is extremely grateful for Howard’s double platelet donations. Platelets are essential for blood clotting. They are routinely needed for cancer therapy, open-heart surgery, blood disorders and organ transplant. They must be transfused within five days, requiring the supply to be constantly replenished.
A double platelet donation is dependent on the donor’s platelet count. If you are able to give a double platelet donation you can help more patients.
“I want to go for 300,” Howard said with a smile. “Then I’m going to quit! Well, that depends on how I feel. I could go further — as long as I’m vertical! It’s a way to help some people!”
