PIQUA — Wellness is being brought to the forefront of the American Heart Association’s Go Red Goes North Luncheon and Corporate Wellness Event coming to the Fort Piqua Plaza in September. According to the American Heart Association, one out of three women dies of heart disease and strokes every year. However, 80 percent of cardiac events are preventable.

“Go Red For Women is about much more than wearing red on National Wear Red Day. It’s about making a change,” Susan Curtis of Miami Valley Steel and the chair of this year’s event said. “For more than a decade, millions of women have united to raise their voices about this silent killer. While we’ve made remarkable progress, nearly 1,100 women are still dying each day. But, with your help, many more lives can be saved. That’s why we support this important event.”

During this year’s event, they will be teaching women ways that they can better improve their lives so that they are not affected by heart disease and strokes, Curtis said. There will be a health and wellness expo held before the luncheon. The event will also be emceed by radio host Nancy Wilson of K99.1 FM. The luncheon will also feature the motivational speaker and comedienne Kay Francis in addition to a local personal story of hope and inspiration.

“The focus of the event is on education and educating people on the cause of heart disease and strokes and showing them ways to combat (them),” Curtis said.

Curtis has been involved with the American Heart Association for four years and has connected with people affected by heart disease through family members, friends, and coworkers.

“It’s a solid organization,” Curtis said. “I wanted to be a part of that.”

The Go Red Goes North Luncheon and Corporate Wellness Event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Fort Piqua Plaza Banquet Center, located at 308 N. Main St. in downtown Piqua. The health and wellness expo will begin at 10 a.m. and the luncheon is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the American Heart Association.

“We do try to keep as many dollars in our area as possible,” Curtis said. A portion of the proceeds will be used locally to continue to promote health and wellness in the area.

The 2015 Go Red Goes North Event is sponsored locally by Upper Valley Medical Center, part of Premier Health. Other local sponsors include Wilson Memorial Hospital and Midmark. Media sponsors are WPTW/Muzzy Broadcasting, the Troy Daily News, the Piqua Daily Call, the Sidney Daily News and the Record Herald. Go Red for Women is sponsored nationally by Macy’s.

Tickets are $40 per person. There are also corporate tables available. For more information about the Go Red for Women luncheon or to reserve a seat, contact Ellen Duncil at (937) 853-3102 or ellen.duncil@heart.org or visit heart.org/dayton.
