Heroin and Opiate Education Seminar

TIPP CITY — The Tipp City Masonic Lodge No. 174 and the Tipp City Police Department will host a Heroin and Opiate Education Seminar from 7-9 p.m. March 21 at the Tipp City Government Center located at 260 S. Garber Drive in Tipp City. This event will inform residents on how heroin and opiate use is affecting their community, identify steps being taken by local agencies to fight drug abuse and community resources available to help residents. Amy Cost, Community Outreach Specialist for the Miami County Recovery Council, will provide an overview of the heroin and opioid crisis, drawing from her present work in the community as well as her perspective as a retired military veteran. A panel discussion will follow, including representatives from local addiction treatment agencies and officials from Miami County Public Health and the Tipp City Police Department. This event is free to the public.

Blood drive set

TIPP CITY — Voss Honda Tipp City will celebrate spring and everything Irish by hosting a community blood drive Friday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Community Blood Center Bloodmobile will be at 155 S. Garber Drive.

Everyone who registers to donate will receive the CBC “Kiss Me – I Donate Blood” St. Patrick’s Day t-shirt. Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment online at or call 1-800-388-GIVE.

West Milton tax help available

WEST MILTON — Need help filing your city taxes? West Milton city tax help will be available at the city building on March 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and March 29 from 4-7 p.m.

Please bring your W-2 forms and any other taxable income documents.

Food safety training offered

TROY — Ohio State University Extension, Miami County has partnered with TAP (Training Achievement Program) Series to offer an online version of the Level 2 Food Safety training which meets all Ohio Department of Health requirements.

You can complete the online course at your own speed and at a time that works for you. Once training is completed, you will take a proctored certification exam in Troy.

Registration fee of $150 is non-refundable for both the online class and exam. There is an additional fee of $25, if the selected exam date is rescheduled. The ServSafe Manager exam is proctored by an OSU Extension Educator who is a Certified ServSafe® Proctor.

Exam dates are:

• April 21, 12-3 p.m. — register by April 6

• May 4, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. — register by April 20

• May 19, 12-3 p.m. — register by May 5

All exams will take place in the Old Troy Courthouse, OSU Extension Office Meeting Room, 201 W. Main St. To register, contact the OSU Extension Office, Miami County at (937) 440-3945.

BNC offers open house

TROY — Brukner Nature Center operates the largest licensed wildlife rehabilitation unit in the Miami Valley.

Last year, BNC’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Unit admitted 1,464 orphaned, injured and sick native Ohio wildlife into our care for advanced treatment. Thousands of staff and volunteer hours went into the care of more than 75 different species of animals from 23 different counties in Ohio.

On March 26, staff and volunteers invite the public to take a guided tour of BNC’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Unit from 2-4 p.m. Learn what a day in the life of a rehabilitation organization is like, meet a wildlife ambassador that once was a part of the rehab program, visit with a variety of vendors involved with wildlife conservation and enjoy refreshments.

Tours will take place from 2-4 p.m., with groups leaving every 15 minutes. Admission to this event is the donation of an item from the wildlife rehab wish list: Gift cards to Meijer, Lowes, Petco and Tractor Supply, Pedialyte (unflavored), fresh fruit and vegetables, cotton balls, Dawn dish soap, Cheerios (plain), He laundry detergent, Clorox wipes, bleach, 30 gallon force flex trash bags, live mealworms, live wax worms, 8-inch to 12-inch bungee cords, hard-shelled nuts (acorns, walnuts, etc), peanuts, black oil sunflower seed and mixed seed.
