Newton students to perform with All-State ensembles

PLEASANT HILL — Milan Bess and Jackson Riffle, both juniors at Newton High School, were selected by audition to perform in the 2016 Ohio Music Education Association All-State Ensembles. Bess will be in the All-State Choir and Riffle will be in the All-State Band in the percussion section.

Nearly 1,000 high school students auditioned for a coveted spot in one of the four groups. Reviewers carefully and blindly screened the auditions and scored each musician. Students were then ranked and chosen based on the strength of their musical abilities.

A total of 161 students were selected for the choir and 90 were selected for the band.

Dr. Paul Rardin, director of choral activities at Temple University, will be conducting the All-State Choir. Dr. Mary K. Schneider, associate professor of music and director of bands at Eastern Michigan University will be conducting the All-State Band.

Both groups will rehearse and perform at the 2016 OMEA Professional Development Conference in the Cincinnati Convention Center on Jan. 28-30.

Performances are open to the public
