Council approves change for senior center

TIPP CITY — At a special meeting held Tuesday, the Tipp City council approved an ordinance that will help the Tipp City Seniors Inc. move forward in purchasing a building for their new center.

Council held the meeting to vote on an ordinance that would add fraternal, charitable and service-oriented groups to the list of permitted uses in the office service zoning district and amend the zoning map. The Tipp City Seniors are considering the purchase of building in an area zoned for office service.

Council heard the first reading of the ordinance last month, but did not have a meeting on Monday, Spet. 4, because of the Labor Day holiday.

“They are currently looking at purchasing [a building], the seniors,” City Manager Tim Eggleston said, adding that the Planning Board recommended the change at their last meeting.

Council has passed similar ordinances in the past, when the Tipp City Seniors Inc. considered two other properties for their new senior center.

Tipp City and Monroe Township voters passed a 1-mill, five year levy in 2015 to raise money for a new home for the organization, which initially planned to build a new facility to replace the current center on South First Street.

The organization has considered several locations and abandoned them due to Miami Conservancy District restrictions and cost issues. Council passed ordinances amending the zoning code to permit fraternal, charitable and service-oriented clubs at those locations on North Third Street and North Hyatt Street, which are zoned CD-Conservation Zoning District and LI-Light Industrial Zoning District respectively.

They have since found an existing building, the former Evans Title building on North Hyatt just north of the post office, and made plans to move the center to that location.

In order for this plan to move forward, Tipp City Seniors is again asking council to amend the zoning code to add fraternal, charitable and service-oriented clubs as a permitted use within the OS-Office Service Zoning District.
