Commissioners approve speed study

Approve purchase of security cameras for municipal court

MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami County Commissioners approved several contracts and purchases at their meeting Thursday.

Over the next year, all curves on county and township roads will be studied to determine safe driving speeds. The commissioners approved a speed safety study as requested by the county engineer.

“They actually do drive the curves. They have an instrument which determines the centrifugal force that is being put on the vehicle as it goes around the curve,” County Engineer Paul Huelskamp said. “Safe speed limits are then suggested based on those readings.”

The $48,280 study will be 90 percent federally funded. The local share will be paid from the road fund.

The commissioners also awarded a contract for the construction of a new restroom building in Bethel Township’s Friendship Park. The $101,800 project was awarded to GJO Distributors and Contracting.

The commissioners also approved an agreement with ACCESS Engineering Solutions to complete a sanitary sewer system inflow and infiltration study in Bradford.

The study will be partially paid for by grant funding with the remaining $15,000 to be paid by the village of Bradford.

The commissioners also authorized the purchase of 10 security cameras for the Municipal Court at a cost not to exceed $20,405. The purchase of two new light bars for the sheriff’s office’s new cruisers at a cost of $2,513 was also approved.

The commissioners also authorized the county engineer to apply for a grant for the Kessler-Cowlesville Road reconstruction project. The project will repave a section of the road from Nashville Road up to the corporate limit of Tipp City.

Kessler-Cowlesville is a “chip and seal” road, which has seen an increase in traffic due to recent development in the area, Huelskamp said.

In other business, the commissioners met with Sheriff Charles Cox and Chief Deputy Dave Duchak to begin the year-end budget review process.
