Gas prices lowest in six years

MIAMI COUNTY — Nationwide, consumers are going to see the lowest gas prices in six years this summer.

The Energy Department reported the national average price is forecast to fall 32 percent from a year ago to $2.45 a gallon between April and September, the period when Americans do most of their driving.

Public Affairs Manager for AAA Allied Group Inc. Cindy Antrican said while gas is a little higher currently, it is down nearly a dollar from the previous year.

“Here in our area, the current average price is $2.86,” she said. “It’s up a week ago when it was $2.76 and a month ago when it was $2.47.”

The Memorial Day travel forecast predicted record-setting travelers, more than AAA had ever seen for the time period they began tracking traveler data in 2001.

Factors such as a busy hurricane season, problems at the oil refineries that supply the area, or any out-of-the-ordinary events going on that would affect geopolitical situations have a bearing on gas prices,

“Prices can move, although AAA is pretty confident that prices will remain under $3 a gallon for the rest of this year,” she said.

Antrican felt the increase in demand is what drove the decrease in prices.

“Suppose you were driving home from work tonight, and you need to get gas but decided to let it wait until tomorrow,” she said. “Then the gas increases 16 cents. Obviously that’s night going to make you happy, but in the whole scheme of things, 10 or even 20 cents a gallon when you add it up for the price you fill up it doesn’t even equate a cup of coffee.”

That dollar a gallon saved month after month makes an impact on consumers over the course of the year.

“It’s more money in the consumer’s pocket, and it’s a double that they have saved month after month,” she said.
