UNION TOWNSHIP — A crash involving a Rumpke trash truck and a pair of SUVs saw two drivers sent to area hospitals — one via CareFlight — on Wednesday morning.

According to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, a SUV was eastbound in the 5000 block of West State Route 55 just before 8 a.m. Wednesday when it struck the rear corner of a Rumpke truck that was stopped to pick up trash. The impact sent the SUV into the opposite lane, where it was struck by a westbound SUV.

According to Lt. Michael Whaley of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the Honda SUV was identified as Cecil Chaney, 63, of West Milton. He was trapped in his vehicle for around 20 minutes while firefighters from West Milton and Ludlow Falls performed an extrication. CareFlight was called to transport Chaney to Miami Valley Hospital.

The second driver, Margaret Missimer, 56, of Troy, was taken to Upper Valley Medical Center where she is no longer listed as a patient.

The driver of the Rumpke truck, Steve Elifitz, 40, of Greenville, was not injured.

Bridgett Biggs, safety manager for Rumpke said, “First and foremost, we extend our thoughts and prayers to anyone involved in today’s accident. We appreciate the quick response from the local emergency crews and we will work with them to conduct a thorough investigation and quickly clear the scene.”

State Route 55 was closed to all traffic during the investigation and clean up of the crash.

Whaley said Chaney is list in critical condition at Miami Valley Hospital where he is being treated for “several broken bones.”

The crash remains under investigation by the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.
