TROY — The McKaig and Race Park’s Storybook Walk has become the target of vandals once again.
It is the fourth time the display has been damaged since March, according to Troy-Miami County Public Library Executive Director Rachelle Miller.
The walking trail has 20 permanent posts, which includes two pages of a book. The storybook walk is on city property, but the library is responsible for upkeep, Miller said.
The storybook walk was dedicated May 12, 2016.
Miller said the vandalism has cost the library about $650. Additional costs include purchasing new books (to replace the destroyed pages) and staff time to pick up the broken pieces, order the replacement Lucite, and then install the new piece.
“I’ve never understood the reason someone would want to vandalize property of any kind. How is that a good time?” Miller said. “It’s disheartening for the people who enjoy the park and discouraging for the staff who work on this project.”
Miller said Hemm’s Glass has been instrumental in getting the repairs done quickly.
The $6,100 project was funded primarily by a bequest from Rex and Marcella Sunday. The Optimists also contributed to the project.
