MIAMI COUNTY — The Miami County Sheriff’s Office conducted another successful countywide sex offender registration sweep with help from 21 officers from local agencies and the U.S. marshals on Thursday.
According to Capt. Mike Marion, only four offenders out of the 139 addresses checked are currently unaccounted for as of noon Thursday. Marion said the sheriff’s department will follow up on those four offenders and will determine if there will be any pending charges.
Marion said no additional charges or arrests have been filed from those they did meet with during this year’s sweep. To prepare for the annual check, all 139 offenders’ records are checked by officials to find warrants or other issues. Only one offender had a warrant out of Logan County, which the office is checking as of press time.
Miami County has 139 registered sex offenders, down from approximately 175 offenders in 2013. In 2013, Miami County Sheriff’s Office began quarterly checks, assigning road patrol a set number of offenders to conduct random checks.
Over the last six years, 30 offenders have either been incarcerated for non-compliance or they moved out of Miami County due to stringent checks.
“We’ve had several people tell us that this county isn’t for them because of how strict we are with the rules and regulations so they pull up stakes and go to another county. I think it’s going really well because we are down 40 offenders in the last six years,” Marion said.
Sgt. Marion urged parents to check addresses for offenders prior to the Halloween events. Unless an offender is on active parole, they are not prohibited from passing out candy during Halloween.
“We do this every year around Halloween for community awareness. The general public can access the full list or search by zip code to find offenders in their area. We encourage parents and guardians who will be with their children trick-or-treating to look at our website and check the area before they go out and know what addresses to avoid,” Marion said.
