TIPP CITY — A 9-year-old boy is facing charges after stealing his grandmother’s car Saturday and driving it up and down Interstate 75.
According to the grandmother’s call to 911, she allowed the 9-year-old boy to take her phone and listen to music in her car, which was parked on grass behind her house in Tipp City.
The boy drove the car, a 2007 white Toyota Camry, down to the city of Dayton, and turned around, driving the vehicle back to Tipp City, according to reports.
Dayton post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Geoffrey Freeman said another law enforcement agency was in pursuit of the vehicle for a short time and stopped as it was considered too dangerous.
The boy again came off the highway in Tipp City and saw an OSHP cruiser, crashing into a 2010 red Chrysler Town and Country driving on State Route 571 at Garber Road, Freeman said. The Camry became disabled and the driver — now found to be a child — was taken into custody, Freeman said.
“No units were ever in pursuit,” Freeman said of the OSHP.
No one was injured during the crash or at any other time during the incident, Freeman said.
The boy was released to his grandmother following the incident and Freeman said the boy faces charges of stealing the car along with possible other charges.
