M-U BOE talks bus barn renovations

WEST MILTON — The Milton-Union Board of Education called a meeting Monday to discuss adding onto the red barn at the old high school parking lot.

Superintendent Ginny Rammel said the board is looking to add 14 feet onto the bus barn for storage. The project will cost $67,000, and so far the board has received a quote from Nu-Way Builders of Greenville in that amount.

“Nu-Way constructed this building 39 years ago,” Rammel said. “I would want them because they’d know how to match the building.”

The board is looking for two more quotes and plans to not take action until August.

Rammel added the board was talking about painting the exterior of the barn, but would first need to match the additional unit to the barn to ensure the overall appearance would blend together and the addition would not look obvious.

The project will be paid for from the permanent improvements fund, which covers technological purchases, honeysuckle removal, track resurfacing and bus purchases.

In other business, the board talked about expanding the parking lot at Memorial Stadium/the old high school.

The project is still is discussion and would not be undertaken until spring 2016, after the weather breaks.

The board also discussed Lowry Woods. Four volunteers are needed to cut wood and to clean up the woods prior to cross country season and back-to-school starting.
