Speaker set at museum
TROY — Air Force MSgt. Amy Cost will be speaking to veterans on the opiate and heroin issues in Miami County, plus trends and efforts to fight against this addiction in Miami County beginning at 9 a.m. Feb. 1 at the Miami Valley Veterans Musem, 107 W. Main St., Troy.
This will be during the museum’s monthly free coffee and doughnuts for veterans.
After a distinguished military career, Cost now works for Miami County Recovery Council, a mental health and addiction counseling center in Troy as their community outreach specialist. While in the Air Force, MSgt. Cost worked for her first 12 years on active duty as a security forces member. As an Air Force SP, she was stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana; RAF Lakenhealth in England and Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota.
In 1999, she was selected to cross train into recruiting duty where she spent the rest of her career. She started as an enlisted accessions recruiter, and selected to work as an Operations NCO and Public Affairs and Marketing NCO. Her last assignment was as a recruiting flight chief where she supervised eight recruiters that cover half of the state of North Carolina.

Personal finance course offered
TROY — A 12-week course for those seeking a new direction in handling their personal finances — with a faith-based and common sense approach — will be offered by Partners in Hope of Troy.
The course will be offered on Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m.m, beginning Feb. 23 at the Hobart Community Kitchen, 25 N. Mulberry St., Troy. Those interested in registering should call Partners in Hope at (937) 335-0448 or stop in to our office at 116 W. Franklin St, Troy.
Pruning class planned by Master Gardeners
TROY — The OSU Miami County Master Gardener program is offering a six-week pruning class every Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. starting Feb. 22.
Class topics will include tree biology and how it relates to pruning, pruning equipment and care, techniques and pruning for specific landscapes. Students are asked to bring their pruning shears to the Feb. 22 class to learn how to properly sharpen them. The class includes in-class instruction and on-site pruning of shrubs and small trees using a variety of pruning equipment. The class will be taught by Miami county Master Gardener volunteers, including an ISA Certified Arborist.
The classes will meet at the Ohio State Extension office, located on the ground floor of the Miami County Courthouse, 201 W. Main S., Troy. The cost of the class is $40 for the public and $30 for out-of-county Master Gardener volunteers.
Registration can be completed by visiting or calling the Miami County Extension office or mailing a check payable to OSU Extension to the address listed above. Registration is limited and the class fills quickly. The deadline to register is Feb. 15.
